ST PAUL'S CATACOMBS St Paul's Catacombs is a typical complex of underground Roman cemeteries that were in use in Malta up to the 4th Century A.D. However, the network of cemeteries at St.Paul's is amongst the largest to be found in the Maltese Islands to date. The catacombs - which are actually composed of a series of interconnected burial sites - are characterised by typical features common to the Maltese catacombs. Such features include the so-called 'agape tables' hewn out of rock on which mourners reclined to partake of the funeral wake. A wide variety of tombs may be admired at St Paul's, such as the 'baldachino tomb' and various types of 'window tombs'. These catacombs include evidence of use by pagan, Christian and Jewish communities | St Paul's Catacombs |
