GHAR DALAM CAVE
Ghar Dalam Cave extends itself into the hillside to a depth of circa 200m, the inner parts of which are not accessible. The site is well-known for the ancient strata discovered within it, which belong to two distinct phases. The first phase dates back to the Interglacial Period (250000 years ago), from which fossils and bones originated, with particularly abundant remains of varieites of Pleistocene fauna. The second phase marks the arrival of the first farmers to Malta during the Early Neolithic Period. Amongst the many discoveries to be made at Ghar Dalam were animal bones of hippopotami, three species of dwarf elephant, as well as the remains of a species of large swan. This proves that at one stage Malta had a land connection with Sicily. | Ghar Dalam |
