Activities

The Maltese love their horses and have a long tradition of horse riding and racing. The islands have the oldest polo club in Europe and one of the longest race tracks. Wherever you go around the islands, you will be greeted by valuable trotting horses out for exercise or having a health-giving cool off in the shallows down by the harbour.  Humbler horses and ponies are still part of daily working life on some farms.

Country riding, or hacking, mostly organised during the temperate winter months, is an ideal way to explore the Maltese landscape with its views and quiet lanes.

A typical route takes you from Marsa, the Maltese centre for equestrian facilities, along to the tranquil countryside around Siggiewi, before heading inland to Rabat and Buskett. Other popular areas for riding are along the north-east bays, such as Golden Bay, around Mellieha and on Gozo.  Wherever you ride, you are bound to encounter some spectacular cliff and sea views.

Rides are available for both novices and more experienced riders.
